Modelled mean time Plasmodium vivax relapse map in 2013 globally

This map shows the predicted mean time to first P. vivax relapse.

Measures of time to relapse were obtained from 5,731 first recurrence events observed in 30,049 cases of P. vivax. Geographic zones to describe variation in relapse periodicity were included in a meta-analysis of relapse rate. The boundaries shown in the map represent the zones that produced the best model choice. A further meta-analysis of mean time to first relapse was done using only data from cases to experience a relapse to determine mean relapse time by zone.

Areas outside the geographic zones chosen are shown in grey. The mean time to first relapse in each zone is shown on spectrum of red to blue, with red being the fastest time from primary infection to first relapse. This was predicted to be highest in Southeast Asia and Melanesia.
